"The Humanities in Crisis: How Did We Get Here and Where Do We Go from Here? "
It is commonplace to decry the crisis of, in, and with the humanities. How did we reach this point of crisis? The humanities often find themselves on the defensive within research universities and the public at large trying to justify their existence in the face of declining enrollments and greater institutional and societal emphasis on applied majors and careers. By exploring past trends in the humanities (especially within the context of the German research university and current literary theoretical trends), this talk will explore possible ways to rethink the humanities within the university-especially in terms of material culture-so that we can play offense rather than defense.
